Cuando su hija de 13 años vino a pasar las vacaciones de verano con ella, se dio cuenta de que esta no se sentía cómoda en un cuerpo que sangraba y que no llegaba a conocer.
En aquel entonces cogió papel higiénico y medias y buscó fotografías para reproducir una vulva. En ese momento se dio cuenta de que apenas había representaciones de vulvas.
Paralelamente acudió a un encuentro de “orgasmo cósmico” de la mano de Annie Sprinkle y Joseph Kramer.
A finales de los 80 empezaron a aparecer casos de SIDA y este es el mensaje que sus hijos estaban recibiendo sobre la sexualidad. Tenía claro que no quería que esto fuera así.
En 1992 creó la primera vulva puppet, como herramienta de educación sexual. Un juguete universal, cercano y original para demostraciones didácticas. Esos peluches hoy en día, son utilizados en todo el mundo por educadores, doctores, terapeutas, padres y artistas.
“Durante el diseño, me di cuenta de la importancia de los colores. Para mis creaciones sólo utilizo colores de la realeza: negro, violeta, dorado y rojo. Quiero que estas vulvas se vean sensuales y bellas.”
En su propia experiencia personal pudo ver cómo era más fácil enseñar a su hija a que conectara con su cuerpo y poder iniciar conversaciones más cercanas.
Entrevistamos a Dorrie en su casa y pudimos observar lo importante que las vulvas son para ella, no sólo las que ella produce, si no las expresiones de otros artistas sobre la sexualidad femenina.
Hablamos sobre las mujeres que gobiernan hoy en día que ella percibe como mujeres muy poderosas sexualmente.
Eve Ensler, la creadora de los Monólogos de la Vagina, al ver las vulva puppets, vio que era la forma perfecta para cambiar la manera en la que las mujeres sienten sus propios cuerpos.
“Quiero que sepan que la vulva es la fuente de la vida. Quiero que sepan cómo exquisitamente hermosas y únicas son nuestras vulvas y por encima de todo, quiero que la vulva de peluche ayude a desafiar el estigma de la vergüenza, la falta de respeto y la invisibilidad.”

When her daughter was 13 years old, she came to spend the summer holidays with her, and she realized that she didn´t feel comfortable in a body which bleed, and that she didn´t reach to understand.
Then she took some toilet paper and red tights and she looked for vulva representations for modelling a sample that helped her to explain it to her daughter. Then she realized, she almost couldn´t find vulva representations – at all.
In the same time, Dorrie went to a “cosmic orgasm” event organized by Annie Sprinkle and Joseph Kramer.
In the late 80’s, first AIDS cases started to appear, and this got to be the main message about sexuality that her sons were receiving – a frightening one. She knew she didn´t want this to be so.
In 1992, she created the first Vulva Puppet, as a tool for sexual education. A universal toy, close and original for didactical demos. These puppets are used today all around the world by educators, doctors, therapist, parents and artists.
“During the design process, I realized the importance of the colours. In my creations I only use royalty colours: black, velvet, gold and red. I want these vulvas to be sensual and beautiful”.
In her own experience, she could see how easier was to teach her daughter to connect with her body for starting closer conversations through the vulva puppet.
We interview Dorrie in her house, and we could observe the importance of the vulvas for her, not just the ones she produces, but also any other artist’s expressions about feminine sexuality.
We talked about the women who rule the world today, that she perceives as sexually powerful women.
Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologue´s writer, when she saw the vulva puppets, she though it was the perfect way to change the way women feel her own bodies.
“By making the Vulva Puppet available, I want to change the way women feel about their own bodies. I want them to know the vulva is the source of life. I want them to know how exquisitely beautiful and unique our vulvas are; I want to remind the world the vulva is the source of life. Most of all, I want the puppet to challenge the stigma of shame, disrespect and invisibility”
In the end, the Dorrie Lane mission is to achieve people don´t feel shame of their bodies and their sexuality, and to live it freely.
